Standing Buffalo Economic Corridor Initiative

For thousands of years, the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) Nations maintained vast trade networks that connected our people across the plains and woodlands of North America. These traditional routes facilitated commerce, diplomacy, and economic self-sufficiency long before colonial borders were imposed. Today, Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation is reviving these historic trade pathways through the Standing Buffalo Economic Corridor Initiative—a bold strategy to advance Indigenous-led trade, attract investment, and create new economic opportunities for our Nation and our relatives across Turtle Island.

The Standing Buffalo Economic Corridor is designed to leverage the unique jurisdictional and sovereign rights of Indigenous Nations to establish a competitive and sustainable economic hub. Through strategic partnerships, infrastructure development, and trade facilitation, the initiative aims to:

-Strengthen Indigenous-to-Indigenous trade relations
-Create tax and duty efficiencies for investors and businesses
-Attract manufacturing and commerce to reserve lands
-Establish a modern supply chain network rooted in traditional trade routes
-Empower Dakota-Lakota Nations through economic self-determination

Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation has been recognized as a leader in Indigenous economic development and has been invited to participate in the 2025 Reservation Economic Summit (RES 2025) as part of Canada’s official delegation through Global Affairs Canada. This invitation reflects a growing recognition of the importance of Indigenous-led trade initiatives and represents a step forward in Canada’s commitment to reconciling historical exclusions of Dakota-Lakota Nations in economic and diplomatic affairs.

We invite you to explore the full development plan for the Standing Buffalo Economic Corridor and join us in shaping a future where Indigenous Nations reclaim and lead North America’s economic landscape.
